A Vision of the Future From Dell World

Vision-Future-Dell-World

The world of network has started to be important in the field of communication with the development of the internet since the mid-nineties. Although it was developed for military purposes before, the world wide web (www), which came with e-mail, instant messaging, VoIP, video calls, discussion forums, blogs, social networks and online shopping sites, has been a revolution. It enabled people to get news from different ways, to reach information faster and most importantly, to speed up communication.

Until 15-20 years ago, when we thought commercially, only 1-2 brands would come to mind. Normally, there is a neutral institution such as IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) in determining network and technology standards (1963). However, since this organization did not aim at marketing and sales, it could not prevent the first companies from growing as if they were a monopoly. Nowadays, it is not difficult for manufacturers to make network equipment as before. It's the software side that makes the real difference. Different manufacturers came together in the formation of new standards and started to popularize the open standards accepted by IEEE (eg ONIE: Open Network Install Environment).

In the acceleration of this structuring, SDN (Software Define Networking) 4-5 years ago is of great importance in software-based network formation. Of course, the companies that have the market try to continue with the understanding (closed systems) that their cats are always preferred and not to go to other addresses. But the world has changed and continues to change every day. "The only constant is change itself" (Heraclitus). Therefore, companies that intend to be unique are losing market share every day.

Man does not like to be restrained. Unlike some companies, visionary companies desire to try and discover what is better and different. SMEs and corporate companies are now thinking about how we can grow faster and expand more harmoniously. The future expansion of the systems, total ownership costs, energy consumption in summary Price - Performance has become important for many companies.

We can give a good example of this real-life demand for change, sometimes even when our children speak fast, we as parents don't understand some of their words. We try to figure out what he means by paying a little attention to his inclinations so that we can speak the same language with him. In short, we keep up with change. If we want to ban it from understanding, they try to get what they want by finding a different way. Human nature fights for freedom. That's why we should direct instead of prohibiting it.

We try to follow the current technology and future innovations in the same way. Compared to the past, there are no restrictions, manufacturer-independent, more flexible software that allows more flexible structures and brands to work integrated. They have already achieved this with system-side virtualization technology. Now it is time for more open standards and manufacturer-independent software to become widespread in the network. Many manufacturers have been working on Open Networking for about 5-6 years. One of the pioneers of this is Dell Networking. As a matter of fact, Dell Networking Campus has only been active for 7-8 years, but it has started to gain a place in the face of companies of 20-30 years as an innovation and a pioneer of change. He started to produce Open Networking supported products primarily on the Datacenter side where he is more experienced. I say the datacenter side, because as you know, the Dell brand is the leader in the system side and continues on its way with greater momentum after the EMC merger. Therefore, it was wise to start its success in server and storage devices on the Datacenter Network side. In recent years, we see that Open Networking products are announced for campus networks.

To summarize, whether an organization has the hardware of the X manufacturer, whether it is a Y manufacturer, or a network device belonging to the Dell brand. A software that supports open networking can run on these hardware. If we give an example of virtualization on the system side; Today, virtualization solutions such as Vmware Esxi, HyperV or KVM can run on all x86 architectures. In other words, its hardware can be x86 architecture belonging to any manufacturer. Both the choice for the customer is increasing, and software companies are introducing innovations with different solutions. Software companies such as Cumulus Networks, PICA8, Pluribus, IP Infusion (Operating systems) offer various solutions for Open Networking. In fact, a Linux-based network operating system such as Sonic Network is purchased by Microsoft and investments are made on behalf of Open Networking. The table below is an example of using Open Networking compatible hardware instead of traditional hardware.

These products are referred to as White Box in the industry. In other words, systems that are open to software development supporting Open Networking. Dell Technologies has developed VEP4600 models for use in central points and VEP14x5 models for use in office / branch offices. If we come to the question of what these products and software can provide us? It is possible to simplify the WAN (Wide Area Network) management of the systems of multi-branch companies (50-100-200…. Branches) and even to implement system changes quickly. Service providers in our country have started to use this technology. Moreover, companies that will gain great flexibility when network virtualization is implemented. As in the image on the right, the use of different hardware for each solution will be simplified thanks to VNF (Virtualized Network Function). Below you can see what can be done with a uCPE hardware.
