The inevitable rise of mobile apps

We trust our mobile apps, we love them. When this is often the case, every business opens a mobile channel and each entrepreneur develops a mobile idea. In this article, I will share the current statistics and developments on this issue, which is becoming increasingly important both economically and socially. 9 out of 10 people worldwide have a cell phone. The competition in mobile phones continues unabated between Apple's iPhone with iOS operating system and all other smartphones using the Android operating system. According to Statcounter data, the Android operating system has a market share of 75 percent worldwide. In the European, Russian and Far East markets, Android is dominant, but in North America the situation is a bit different because iOS surpasses Android with 53 percent. In Europe, iOS comes first only in the UK, with 52 percent. In parallel, European countries because the situation is very different from us to say that Turkey Android dominate more than 80 percent of the market.

When we examine the competition at the device brand level, Samsung is the market leader with a share of around 30 percent in the world, while the iPhone is in the second place with a share of around 22 percent. Still, the iPhone takes the lead in some of the world's most developed markets such as North America and the UK. Moreover, it reveals an astonishing reality as it is the market leader in China, which is the largest market in the world, which it entered relatively recently, again ahead of the Chinese brand Huawei.

The digital world from within the application

Apple iPhone users can download their applications from the AppStore; Android users download it from Google Play. According to the data in Statista, at the end of the second quarter of 2019, 2.5 million applications were included in Google Play and 1.96 million applications in the AppStore. If we consider the platforms of Amazon and Microsoft, we are talking about roughly 5 million applications. Of course, very few of them manage to meet their target customer base. Millions of applications trying to attract the extremely limited attention of mobile phone users… Moreover, the advertisements of the applications that advertise their presence to the target audience are also among other applications. In short, we live in a digital world where applications are created within the application.

Consumption figures on the other side of the coin are appetizing. Half of the people run an application that is installed on their mobile phones at least 12 times a day. This figure is even higher in the Millennial Belt; It is reported that 1 in 5 of this generation, which is the most active internet users, interacts with more than 50 applications per day. So if you are between the ages of 23 and 38 and define yourself as an active mobile phone user; You probably click on the icons of the applications 50 times a day on average. A spooky number, right?

Where are these mobile apps going?

The total number of app downloads for 2018 was recorded as 205 billion. Experts estimate that this number will increase by between 15 and 25 percent each year. In other words, we continue to download applications, release new applications and try the ones that come out without getting tired. The economy created through these applications is expected to exceed $ 190 billion in 2020.

Most of the downloaded applications are free download applications. However, the revenue generated by these applications through the advertising model is equivalent to 98 percent of the total application revenue pie. We watch ads in the games and educational apps we play in order to earn life or extra time, to read free news and to see the shares of our friends. There are also those that squeeze ads in between, and those that occupy the screen with ads. There are also those who ask if you want an advertisement, or those who attach it to the content without notice. Whatever form it may be, apps that we download for free are the primary transportation channel of the advertising industry today. These applications collect a lot of data about us, and in this way, we ensure that the ads are relevant to us. However, we do not question for what purposes these data are used other than this.

Applications are getting more automated, more resourceful, and smarter. Who knows, maybe one day they will declare their independence against the cell phones they were born into. When that day comes, we will not talk about the economics of applications. Most likely, the whole economy will become embedded in applications. If you still haven't gotten along with the apps, it's a good idea to rethink because it's already time.
